Haiti – putting our lives in perspective

A tragedy on the scale of what’s happening in Haiti since the earthquake on Tuesday (two days ago) is the type of thing that, if you let it sink in, definitely puts your own life, problems and all, in perspective.

The goals of HaBitza are important – we don’t doubt that – but at this moment it feels frivolous to talk about dating, relationships, marriage, self-fulfillment, while people are dying under rubble because help can’t get to them fast enough. And we can’t rely on their government which, it sounds, is not exactly “for the people.”

We are thinking about the people suffering in Haiti. If you want to donate money but aren’t sure where, one option is the Jewish humanitarian organization VeAhavta, in Toronto. But there are many options including the Israeli government which has a pretty large group of people leaving today for Haiti to give medical help (including a field hospital that can treat around 500 people) and a rescue unit. (My info about this is from a ynet article in Hebrew.)

To donate to VeAhavta click here.

For information about how to donate to the Israeli government click here (a different ynet article). Scroll to the bottom for bank information.

Thanks,

Vera and Deena
